Glo begins Upgrade; Targets 90% Nationwide 3G coverage in 6 months

Nigeria’s second largest Mobile Network, Globacom has started an upgrade on its network across the country in a bid to improve the quality of service and boost its 3G coverage from the 43% where it currently stands, to 90%.

The upgrade which Glo says would cost it $100 million is expected to be concluded in 6 months. The upgrade might not be unconnected with the recent dip in quality which their subscribers have been facing in recent weeks as mentioned in the comments here.

You will remember, that Globacom was one of the networks that got slammed with a fine by the Nigerian Communications Commission  (NCC) for poor QoS, a few weeks ago, a fine I thought was rather absurd and also banned networks from selling new SIM cards till they resolve their QoS issues, but who knows, maybe it was one of the motivations for this upgrade right now.
