Tecno Officially Launches the Phantom Z in Nigeria

TECNO, who need no introduction as far as mobile phones are concerned in Nigeria, yesterday at Sheraton Hotel Lagos officially unveiled the newest addition to their popular “Phantom” range of smartphones—The Phantom Z.

The TECNO Phantom Z features a 7.9mm unibody design; a 5.2 inch, 1920x1080p Full HD display underneath which you will find a MediaTekOctacore processor–the first “true octacore”, alongside 2GB of RAM. Storage stands at 32GB and a 3030mAH battery which TECNO claims would offer 9hrs of talk-time on a 3G network powers all of it. Interestingly, on the photography side of things, the device packs a 16-megapixel rear camera and an 8-megapixel “selfie” camera, both with LED flash.

On the software side of things, the device ships with android 4.4 (KitKat) with full compliments of android apps from Google Play.

Speaking at the launch, Deputy General Manager, TECNO Mobile, Mr. Chidi Okonkwo, remarked that the “Phantom Z is about to revolutionize how Smartphones are used in Nigeria.” He also mentioned that the device will come bundled with MTN, Etisalat, Glo and Airtel data.

At the launch, TECNO also announced a partnership with Opera, which allowed them to offer Opera Mini preinstalled on all the Phantom Z devices. Arjun Bhatt, Director of Partner Marketing, and Opera Software speaking on the partnership said: “We’re delighted to continue our partnership with Tecno in bringing Nigerian mobile users a faster and smoother browsing experience. Opera Mini, which will be pre-installed on the Tecno Phantom Z device, has advanced data-compression technology that allows web pages to be compressed by up to 90%, allowing users to browse without worrying about data costs and network speeds. Nigeria is an exciting and important market for Opera and we look forward to continuing to expand here.”

The device is obviously positioned to battle against Samsung’s own flagship device: Galaxy S5 as was evident with the references to it during the launch. It would be interesting to see how the “battle” pans out in the long term, especially with Samsung’s rather interesting latest earnings report.
