The Most common issues with the BlackBerry 10.3.1.1565 OS and How to fix them

Since BlackBerry OS 10.3.1.1565 became official, it’s gotten a lot of good reviews, especially from those making the jump from 10.2 to 10.3.1 for the first time. The difference between both is like night and day. Like with all things, it’s not all rosy for everyone, a couple of people have encountered one challenge or the other since updating. I have compiled all the ones I have heard about personally below, along with fixes in case you have got a BlackBerry 10 device and you run into one or more of the problems while updating:

Insufficient Space to upgrade:

Some users (mostly Q5 and Z3 users) get prompted with a message asking them to free up a certain amount of space (varies from device to device) to enable the update download and install. BlackBerry has acknowledged the problem in their knowledge base. It apparently happens because BlackBerry 10 needs 2.5 times the size of a downloaded update package to install. BlackBerry recommends that you either make space by deleting stuff or do the update with BlackBerry Link via your computer.

Both the above will work, but another method, which I have tried is to backup your device using BlackBerry link, Do a security wipe, then install the update, before restoring. Alternatively, you can install the last leak, then upgrade (the upgrade from the last leak is just about 10MB).

Screen Flickering:

For some devices, especially the BlackBerry Passport, you may notice that your screen flickers occasionally, when native apps are launched. It may look like your device’s display has an issue, but it actually doesn’t, it’s a software problem. There isn’t exactly a fix out yet, but BlackBerry has confirmed that they are working on a fix which should be available for download soon.

If you can’t wait for the official update, and you consider yourself an advanced user, you can install the fixed files which you find here, to stop the flickering. Like stressed above, this one is for advanced users.

Sluggish during or after Battery Saving Mode

BlackBerry 10.3.1 comes with a battery saving mode which kicks-in by default when your battery goes below 20%. The battery saving mode is fully customizable, so you can turn on or off certain battery saving measures. By default, one of the battery saving measures is to “Limit Maximum CPU Performance”, which basically limits the processor speed and translates to a slightly slower device.

If the speed bothers you while you are on Battery Saving Mode, you can turn that option off at Settings> Battery Saving Mode, then restart the battery saving mode. If you notice that sluggishness persists after plugging back to power, do a hard restart with the volume keys as described here.

Magnified screen:

For some users, (particularly a small segment of those rocking the Q10,) notice that their display has sort of zoomed in, with parts of the UI cut-off from the display. What happens is that for some weird reason, after updating, “Magnify Mode” is turned on on some devices. To turn it off, go to Settings> Accessibility> and turn off Magnify Mode. While in Magnify mode, if you need to get to the portion of the UI that doesn’t fit into the screen, swipe with both fingers.

Can’t Make BBM calls

Immediately after updating, you may notice that trying to make BBM calls only starts the proximity sensor and nothing else. This isn’t an issue per se, because nothing is broken. It is just that you are now using a much older version of BBM than your new OS supports and as a result, it is fixable by going to BlackBerry World and updating your BBM app. (You should update all your apps actually to get the best performance).

Can’t play video files after update

Immediately after the update, some find that playing a video doesn’t display pictures but only plays the audio. It’s a bug, but fortunately, there is a really simple fix for it. Click on the lower left button to browse videos by album instead of date. While in the album view, the videos would play properly. What’s better, is that even if you revert to the date view, it would continue working like it should.

BlackBerry restarts and Data is lost after restart/Blue LED shows during restart

Some have complained that they have issues where a device restarts on its own and when that happens, messages and all the notifications that were received after the update are lost. BlackBerry has acknowledged the problem in their knowledge base and pushed out this fix below:

On windows:

  1. Ensure the latest version of BlackBerry Desktop Software (BlackBerry Link / BlackBerry Blend) for Windows is installed. The latest version is available here: www.BlackBerry.com/Blend.
  2. Connect the BlackBerry 10 device to the computer.
  3. Wait for the device to be detected by the computer and for Windows to complete the driver installation.
  4. Download and save the following ZIP file to the Desktop on the computer: BlackBerryFix.zip
  5. Once downloaded, double-click the BlackBerryFix.zip file to open the ZIP file, then double-click the BlackBerryFix.exe file to run the tool.
  6. When the BlackBerry Fix window displays, confirm that the PIN number for the BlackBerry 10 device is displayed and click Fix this phone.

On a computer running Mac OS X:

  1. Ensure the latest version of BlackBerry Desktop Software (BlackBerry Link / BlackBerry Blend) for Mac is installed. The latest version is available here: www.BlackBerry.com/Blend.
  2. Download and save the following ZIP file to the Desktop on the computer: BlackBerryFix.zip
  3. Once downloaded, double-click the BlackBerryFix.zip file to open the ZIP file, then save the BlackBerryFixMac file to the desktop.
  4. Open Terminal
  5. Navigate to desktop by typing cd Desktop and press enter
  6. Connect the device to the computer
  7. Run the utility by typing ./BlackBerryFixMac and press  enter

These are the top issues I have heard a few people complain about since the BlackBerry 10.3 update went live. If you have encountered any other you don’t have a solution to, or you have a solution different from what we have shared here, let us know in the comments and we’ll update.

...half genius, half unserious.
