WhatsApp, the cross-platform mobile messaging juggernaut has released a rather shocking insight that it will no longer work on all BlackBerry devices by the end of 2016. This rather shocking move was made early last week as WhatsApp Messenger clocked 7 years. According to a blog, the anniversary gave the founders an opportunity to look back to where it all began, and, of course, look to the future.
Besides Blackberry and Blackberry 10 devices, others affected are Nokia S40, Nokia Symbian S60, Android 2.1 & 2.2, and Windows Phone 7.1. Even though this devices were the front runners for WhatsApp back in the day, the company stated, “they won’t offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app’s features in the future”
Today, the vast majority of people use smartphones that run mobile operating systems offered by Google (Android), Apple (iOS) and Microsoft (Windows Phone) and as such, they decided it was time to do away with the others.
“This was a tough decision for us to make, but the right one in order to give people better ways to keep in touch with friends, family, and loved ones using WhatsApp.” , the founders added.
I’m sure the BB10 users won’t like this but it’s best to hope that the WhatsApp apk version will still work on the Blackberry platform. In the meantime, if you’re affected by this move, it is recommended you upgrade to a newer Android, iPhone, or Windows Phone before the end of 2016 to continue using WhatsApp.
