Microsoft Surface Laptop: Everything You Need to Know

Yesterday, the Microsoft Surface Laptop and the new Surface Pro (not called the Surface Pro 5) were made available to buyers in different markets. The device which was launched on May 2nd brings the hardware lineup of the Microsoft Surface to a total of 4 – Surface book, surface studio, surface pro and now, the surface laptop.

The surface laptop is pretty much as ‘laptopy’ as you can get. No gimmicks, no detachable screen or swivel feature. It is just a clamshell laptop with touch features and for conservatives or minimalists like me, this just works.

Just as the other Surface products have been really impressive, you’ll also not be disappointed by what you get from this machine in terms of power and looks. So let’s see what you get from this device;

From the Surface pro to the Studio, design has been top notch. Nobody seems to disagree with the looks of the Surface line. They just keep appealing to you. The Surface Laptop is housed in an aluminum body and features a 13.5-inch and 2256×1504 display (201 PPI). It comes in four colours – Burgundy, Platinum, Cobalt Blue and Graphite Gold.

The dimensions for the device are 12.13” x 8.79” x .57” (308.1 mm x 223.27 mm x 14.48 mm).

Microsoft used Alcantara around the keyboard and trackpad which has raised concern of longevity and durability.

The Surface Laptop will come pre-installed with Windows 10s. It doubles as the flagship device for Windows 10s which is Microsoft’s version of  Google’s Chrome OS. Windows 10s will run only Windows applications from the app store but if this doesn’t work for you, you have a free upgrade to Windows 10 pro till the end of the year. If you get the device say next year, you’ll be charged $50 (about N18,500).

There’s no USB type C port on this device so you’re mostly going to have a dongle-free life. There’s one full-sized USB 3.0 port, a headset jack, Mini DisplayPort and 1 Surface Connect port which is compatible with Surface Dial off-screen interaction.

For Wireless, you get 802.11ac Wi-Fi wireless networking and IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n. The Surface laptop comes with bluetooth 4.0 lte.

Besides the aesthetics, the Surface Laptop is a pretty powerful device. It comes with the 7th Gen Intel® Core™ i5 or i7 processors. For RAM, you have the option of 4GB, 8GB or 16GB.

The Surface Laptop pulled a first ever by integrating the speakers underneath the keyboard so the sound comes from under your fingers. There are no speaker grilles or holes anywhere in the device. Neat right?!

There is a 720HD front-facing camera which is also used for Windows Hello sign-in.

According to Microsoft the Surface Laptop claims to last up to 14.5hours on video playback. If that’s true, then that’s really impressive.

With all these from Microsoft, I think being a Windows fan may just be exciting.
