The gender gap in the technology sector is no news to anyone and when you come down to Nigeria, it seems that the gap is further broadened between Northern Nigeria and Southern Nigeria. This however, can be partly blamed on difference in the level of education in each region.
Making a lot of effort to bridge this gender gap is AboCoders. AboCoders is a non-profit organisation which trains young girls from low-income families in Nigeria especially the Northern zone with digital literacy and computer programming skills. An initiative of Aspilos Foundation, AboCoders aims to provide secure and sustainable livelihoods for young women in Northern Nigeria using ICT training with an emphasis on software development as a means of empowerment.
The girls who are enrolled in the program are trained in digital literacy, coding/programming, business development and financial literacy and also a mentorship and internship scheme. Till date since its launch in October 2015, AboCoders has impacted the lives of at least 213 young girls and counting via different trainings and workshops. (as of January 2017).
